The Piatra Soimului from Pestis village, Bihor county, was first mentioned in official documents in 1306. According to some specialists, the fortress was built in 1242, meaning at the end of the Huns invasion which damaged Transylvania. The name of the fortress comes from the rock it was built on, named Piatra Soimului, which is accessible only for the hawks (“soim” in Romanian means hawk)
Nowadays, The Piatra Soimului Fortress is in ruins, but Alesd City Hall, which manages it, plans to restore The Fortress and transform it into a touristic sight.
