The Medieval Fortress from Drobeta Turnu Severin is a historic monument which has an almost rectangular shape and two fortified walls that surround it. It was built in the 13th century, probably in 1233, by the Hungarian king Andrew the II-nd, which, in 1247, gave it to the Ioanits Knights. After a restless history, with many attacks, the fortress is owned, in 1406, by Mircea cel Batran, who was then the ruler of Severin. In 1524, the fortress is taken by the Ottomans and two years later is demolished. Its ruins served as the base for another fortress in the southern part of the Danube.
Recently, this fortress was restored with European funding and during the process, archaeologists found many historic objects.
