The Tismana Monastery from Tismana, Gorj county, is considered one of the oldest religious edifices from Valachia, being built between 1377 – 1378. It is dedicated to the ”Assumption of The Virgin Mary” and was built by Nicodim with the financial support of Valachian rulers Radu the Ist, Dan the Ist and Mircea cel Batran. Across time, the edifice was enriched with a few buildings and has also undergone a few restorations. In its actual form, the monastery is one of the most beautiful monasteries from Romania. The mural paining from the monastery`s church has a great artistic value and was done in the 16th and 18th centuries.
Tismana Monastery is a pilgrimage place for Christians from all over Romania and was declared a national historic monument.
