The Ocnele Mari city is located in Valcea county, in the Valcea Subcarpathian area, across the Paraul Sarat Valley. The city is surrounded by hills under which there is a 600 meters thick salt massif. This represents the main resource of the place. In fact, the name Ocnele Mari means ”big salt mines” in English.
Thanks to the mineral waters, salt and mud from the salt massif, the city of Ocnele Mari is also a treatment resort for various gynecological, breathing diseases but also for rheum or bone affections in children. It has the largest natural saline from Romania and has many hotels to accommodate tourists.
Ocnele Mari was first mentioned in official documents in 1402, but archaeological discoveries showed the fact that it was inhabited since the stone age.
