The name of Enisala comes from the Turkish “yeni” (which means “new”) and the regional word from Dobrodjea “sale” (which means “settlement” or “village”), meaning “new settlement”. The purpose of the medieval fortress was defensive, military and to supervise the area. It was built under the Byzantin Empire between the 13 – 14th centuries. Then, The Fortress entered into the defensive system of Valachia and after that it became an Ottoman Empire garrison. However, it was abandoned by the Turks, but it was the only medieval fortress which resisted the Russian-Turkish wars throughout Dobrodjea.
