The largest hill of living fires from Romania is in Andreiasu de Jos from Vrancea county, north of Arsita village. The area with the living fires has a surface of 12 hectares. The fires are fueled by the methane gas, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and helium that come from the underground. The capacity of the gas emitted is of 50 tones per year. The area was declared a natural reservation of geologic type. The height of the flames reaches 50 centimeters but in case of an earthquake it can reach 2 meters.
