The Ostrov Monastery from Calimanesti, Valcea county, was built between 1518 – 1522 by the ruler Neagoe Basarab and his wife, Despina. Its name comes from the fact that it is situated on a small island (“ostrov” in Romanian) on the river Olt, right in the center of Calimanesti.

The Ostrov Monastery is dedicated to the “Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary”.
